What matters: The latest IPCC report points to the need for new ideas, inventions, and scaled solutions in "governance, finance, knowledge and capacity building, technology and catalysing conditions."
The IPCC released their latest Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability (27 February 2022), weighing in at 3,675 pages. I was curious to discover how new ideas and inventions are being factored into the IPCC's projections.
When you jump to the end of this email you'll see a 'potential feasibility' table created for politicians. Solutions in the near- and long-term (to 2100) require new ideas and leaders to enable "governance, finance, knowledge and capacity building, [and] technology" solutions (along with "catalyzing conditions" ... which I need to read more about.)
While the report is still a bit too obtuse about the "who" and "how" this change should be enabled, John Kerry simplified the opportunity facing us:
50% of the carbon reductions needed to get to net zero will come from technologies that have not yet been invented. — John Kerry, The Guardian, May 16, 2021
Which Greta Thurnberg used as a launching point for her challenge to us all:
Great news! I spoke to Harry Potter and he said he will team up with Gandalf, Sherlock Holmes & The Avengers and get started right away! — Greta Thunberg (@GretaThunberg) May 16, 2021
Echoing MIT, mens et manus is the first principle solution to the needs, problems, and opportunities that we'll face now and into 2100 and beyond.
It’s an exciting challenge; a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for everyone who participates. Speaking for myself and the entire Disney organization, we’re ready to go right now! — Walt Disney presenting his "Florida Film" October 27, 1966
